Catechesis on Sexagesima (Luke 8:4-15) 2021

On Wednesday nights, Trinity Lutheran Church(Herrin, IL) offers to both children and adults an opportunity for teaching with Learn-by-Heart at 6:30 PM and a catechetical service at 7:00.  This service is designed to prepare God’s people for the theme of the upcoming Sunday Divine Service.  The dialog sermon explains the parable of the sower sowing the seed and the four types of soil (Luke 8:4-15), which is the Holy Gospel for Sexagesima Sunday.  Learn-by-Heart will include hymn #83, stanza 3 of “O God of God, O Light of Light,” Small Catechism, Sacrament of the Altar, 1, and Psalm 1:2 or Luke 8:18.

#16 Passive Blasphemy Is Found in Christians

Severus said, “Doctor, there is a certain doctor in Linz who is sorely tried because he cannot find perfect righteousness in himself and because, when he prays, blasphemies against Christ always come to his mind.

“This is a good sign,” Luther replied. “There are two kinds of blasphemy. First, there is active blasphemy when we consciously and intentionally look for reasons to blaspheme, as Faber, the duke of Braunschweig, and the rest do. God keep us from this! But, second, blasphemy is passive when the devil introduces such perverse thoughts into our heads against our will and in spite of our struggle against them. By means of these thoughts God wishes to occupy us so that we don’t get lazy and snore but fight against them and pray. But when the end of life approaches, these temptations cease, for then the Holy Spirit is near to his Christians, keeps the devil at a distance, and gives us a tranquil and quiet mind.  (Luther’s Works, v. 54, p.373)

Thanksgiving for Heard Prayer 2.

O LORD, we beseech Thee, graciously receive our prayers and supplications which we bring before Thee with thanksgiving, and grant that we, whom Thou in grace hast heard, may be genuinely thankful to Thee, praise and magnify Thy holy name and ever increase in Thy love and service; through Jesus Christ, Thy Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with the Father and the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. Amen.  (Oremus, 1925, p.65).

On Wednesday nights, Trinity Lutheran Church (Herrin, IL) offers to both children and adults an opportunity for teaching with Learn-by-Heart at 6:30 PM and a catechetical service at 7:00.

In this video from February 13, 2019, we learned stanza 1 of “If Thy Beloved Son, O God” (The Lutheran Hymnal#375) and questions one through  three of the Office of the Keys from the Small Catechism. This service is designed to prepare God’s people for the theme of the upcoming Sunday Divine Service.  The dialog sermon explains the parable of the laborers in the vineyard (St. Matthew 20:1-16), which is the Holy Gospel for Septuagesima Sunday.
