After Reading Holy Scripture.

O GOD, Father of all mercies, Thou, Who in the unsearchable riches of Thy grace, hast opened to me the treasure of Thy Word in which we have the knowledge of Thy dear Son, and a sure pledge of our life and salvation: I beseech Thee, grant that I may preserve it in pure faith and burning love unto the end; through the Same Jesus Christ, Thy Son, our Lord, who livest and reignest with the Father and the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. Amen. (Oremus, 1925, p.28).

Before Reading Holy Scripture 4

O GOD, with Whom is the well of life, and in Whose Light we see light : Increase in us, we beseech Thee, the brightness of Divine knowledge, whereby we may be able to reach Thy plenteous fountain; impart to our thirsting souls the draught of life; and restore to our darkened minds the Light from Heaven; through Jesus Christ, Thy Son, our Lord, who livest and reignest with the Father and the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. Amen. (Oremus, 1925, p.27-28).

#4 The Word Brings with it the Desire to Speak

However, this noble word naturally brings with it a burning hunger and unquenchable thirst that can never be filled. Even though many thousands of people believed in it, we would still desire that no person would want for it. Such thirst is ever active and knows no rest, but impels us to speak, as David states in Psalm 116 [:10], “I believe, therefore I speak.” And (as St. Paul declares in II Corinthians 4 [:13]), “We have the same spirit of faith, therefore we, too, speak,” until we include and incorporate everyone with us and make them one communion with us, wherever this is possible.  (Luther’s Works, v.43, p.62)

Picture:  At the top of each of the seven branches is a burning candle.
