Catechesis on Trinity 17 (St. Luke 14:1-11)

On Wednesday nights, Trinity Lutheran Church(Herrin, IL) offers to both children and adults an opportunity for teaching with Learn-by-Heart at 6:30 PM and a catechetical service at 7:00.

In this video from September 19, 2018, we learned stanza 5 of “Chief of Sinners Though I Be” (Lutheran Worship, #285), the first article of the Apostles’ Creed and the meaning from Luther’s Small Catechism.  This service is designed to prepare God’s people for the theme of the upcoming Sunday Divine Service.  The dialog sermon explains the true worship of God (St. Luke 14:1-11), which is taught in the Holy Gospel for the Seventeenth Sunday after Trinity.

The service concludes with “Recite Word by Word” (pdf link below).

For the Parish Church 7.

O GOD, Who dost call all men to Thee, and Who dost graciously receive all them that come: Vouchsafe Thy pardon to all those who here confess their sins; bestow the comfort of Thy Spirit on those who humbly and faithfully bring Thee their needs and sorrows; accept the praise and worship that are offered here; and grant that many may find Thee in this place, and finding Thee, be filled in soul and body with all things needful; and finally with all Thine own, be united in that communion with Thee which is eternal in the heavens, where Thou livest and reignest ever One God, world without end. Amen.  (Oremus, 1925, p.71).

#57 The True Church Has The Preaching Office and the Word of God

Fourth, nobody can deny that we have in fulness and purity the preaching office and the word of God, that we teach and preach diligently, without adding any new, sectarian, or human doctrine, and in this we do just as Christ commanded [Matt. 28:19–20] and as the apostles and all of Christendom have done. We invent nothing new, but hold and remain true to the ancient word of God, as the ancient church had it. Therefore we are, together with the ancient church, the one true church, which teaches and believes the one word of God. So the papists once more slander Christ himself, the apostles, and all of Christendom when they call us innovators and heretics. For they find nothing in us but what belongs to the ancient church—that we are like it, and are one church with it. (Luther’s Works, v.41, p.196)

Catechesis on Trinity Sixteen (St. Luke 7:11-17)

On Wednesday nights, Trinity Lutheran Church (Herrin, IL) offers to both children and adults an opportunity for teaching with Learn-by-Heart at 6:30 PM and a catechetical service at 7:00.

In this video from October 2, 2019, we learned stanza 2 of “If God Had Not Been on Our Side” (The Lutheran Hymnal #267) and the second article and its meaning.  This service is designed to prepare God’s people for the theme of the upcoming Sunday Divine Service.  The dialog sermon explains “The Raising of Widow’s Son from Nain” (St. Luke 7:11-17), which is the Holy Gospel for Trinity Sixteen.

The service concludes with “Recite Word by Word.”    [Length: 1 hour and 7 minutes]

Prayers:  Recite-Word-by-Word.pdf

After Receiving Absolution 2.

LORD Jesus, Whose wonderful Name the Angel foretold, Thy mother bestowed, Simeon acknowledged, Anna praised: Save Thy people in all the world, Thou whose name is majestic in heaven, that Thou Who only art glorious in power, mayest also be gentle in Thy merciful pardon to the lost; Who livest and reignest with the Father and the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. Amen.  (Oremus, 1925, p.63).

#56 The True Church Has The True and Ancient Keys

Third, nobody can deny that we have the true and ancient keys, and do not use them in any other way than to bind and loose sins, committed against the command of God. This we do in accordance with Christ’s institution [Matt. 16:19; John 20:23] and the practice of the apostles and the whole of Christendom until the present day. We have therefore one kind of keys and one common practice with the ancient church. Hence we are this same ancient church, or are, in any event, in it; for we make no new keys, we make no new laws, nor do we exclude kings and lords from, or admit them to, temporal power, but it is only sinners that we exclude from, or admit to, the kingdom of heaven. This we do just as the ancient church did at the Lord’s command, so that the papists libel us once more, indeed, slander us and in us make the ancient church, the apostles, and Christ himself heretical. (Luther’s Works, v.41, p.195-196)
